Odisha to prepare wildlife management plan in newly allotted coal block areas

In order to ensure the protection of wild creatures, including elephants, the Odisha government agreed on Saturday to develop a thorough wildlife management plan through national level institutions for the newly allocated coal block regions.

An official statement said that the decision to hire reputable organisations like the Wildlife Institute of India or Indian Institute of Science to prepare the plan in accordance with national guidelines in a timely manner was made at a meeting here that was presided over by Chief Secretary S C Mohapatra.

Mahapatra gave the go-ahead to create a thorough wildlife (WL) management plan for the newly allocated coal block regions. While assessing the state of wildlife control and forest clearance in freshly assigned coal blocks, he gave this instruction.

Satyabrata Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary for Forest and Environment, informed the gathering that the important reserves like Utkal E coal, Radhikapur East coal, Radhikapur West coal, and Naini coal blocks were among the recently granted coal blocks.

According to Sahu, these impacts were likely to be felt in the Chhendipada, Kaniha, and Jarpada ranges of the Angul Forest Division and the Reamal range of the Deogarh Forest Division.

The Chief Secretary instructed the staff to draught a comprehensive plan for the preservation and protection of wildlife as well as for mitigating the negative effects of coal mining on elephant mobility.
